This is perhaps the most significant step I've taken in my theatre experience so far, for a few reasons. First, I performed for by far the largest audience I had ever seen. Until this point, I had never played for a house larger than around 100, but with the Canadian Badlands Passion Play, I performed for audiences upwards of 1,500 people. Second, this was my first professional performance. For once I wasn't just a student getting student roles, I was a paid actor in a large scale production. Third, it was the first time I'd earned a role through auditioning. Up until then, every role I'd been given had, again, been a student role I was either guaranteed, or it was a near certain thing. To earn the role of John in my first year with the Passion Play was a huge honor. It's also been the largest cast I'd ever seen, the only outdoor show I've ever done, and it was the largest stage I have ever stood upon. This show was a big leap, but it was so very worth it.

The Canadian Badlands Passion Play performs on weekends in July, at the Badlands Amphitheatre in Drumheller, Alberta. It's an epic story of Christ's life, from His first miracles to His crucifixion and resurrection, and tells the stories of His apostles, followers, opponents, and the people He met along the way.

Performers present include, but are not limited to:

  • Ryan Leenheer as John the Beloved

  • Kelsey Krogman as Mary Magdelene

  • Scott Heatcoat as Jesus

  • Matthew Boardman as Little James
