This one scared me. The Director was one of the most central characters I've played yet. I was feeling confident about it, until I heard from one of my instructors that he hadn't thought I was up to the task. Well. I couldn't have that. I pushed hard to make the most heartfelt performance I was capable of, and I think it was a success. (It's worth noting that that same instructor later commented that he was surprised by my work, and was quite pleased with it.) This show also came with a twist I didn't quite know how to handle. It was a true story, based on what happened to my own classmate. It made it all the harder to play a character who was so evil and unkind when I knew this was a real person out there somewhere.
Add on to that a diagnosed, but not fully understood, case of Developmental Coordination Disorder (see New Blood for more information), along with needing to craft my own (mostly) solo dance piece, and this one pushed me way outside my comfort zone, with surprisingly positive results.
Say Hello, Wave Goodbye was a devised movement show, based on the story of Judite Vold, my classmate at the time of performance. It told her story of growing up in an orphanage in Haiti, standing up to the abuse she dealt with there, and ultimately being adopted by a Canadian family who gave her a safe, proper home. Every member of the class created their own dance piece, set to a song by David Gray.
